Red metal facade versus historic brick walls: The town hall of the Dutch municipality of Den Helder moved into two former harbour buildings, each displaying a completely different character. The location was chosen deliberately. The harbour area had been in use by the Royal Netherlands Navy until 1995. The aim was to integrate it into the fabric of the town centre. The site covers 40 hectares, occupied by different museums, leisure facilities, and a marina. Now, it is also home to the city hall. Its functions had previously been distributed among different buildings. Today, they are situated in two former workshop structures of the navy yard.
