Play with visual impressions: Hotel Monville in Montréal

Hotel Monville is located in the immediate vicinity of the highly frequented congress centre and just a few steps from the historic old town. The striking building envelope made of prefabricated concrete elements possesses a strong appearance in the cityscape. The black and white panels are assembled into a strict, geometric pattern which provides the facade with an impression of depth, reminiscent of the vexing effects of Op-Art. A three-storey plinth area with large glass elements directs the gaze of passers-by into the spacious 9.50 m high lobby.

Associative visual vocabulary
The play with visual impressions continues inward. Black columns on top of a white base create a spatial rhythm within the longitudinal foyer. They evoke an almost sacred atmosphere, inspired by the many churches embedded in the urban fabric of Montréal. A cast iron partition element with integrated floor spotlights is reminiscent of the filigree exterior staircases that are typical of the city. Rectangular blocks made of oak are stacked in an irregular pattern and effortlessly conceal the utility and auxiliary spaces.

The associative quality of the visual vocabulary employed for the building is juxtaposed by a restrained colour and material selection. The freely arranged white terrazzo bar is embraced by shelving made of polished brass. Seating in brown hues and with leather upholstery is combined with grey metal tables, inviting visitors to stay and rest. The visual connection to the outside urban life is topically adopted by the black and white photographs by local artist Valerie Jodoin Keaton, exhibited along the lobby wall.
