Postmodern Revisited: Current Design Trends from the Salone del Mobile in Milan

At the world’s largest furniture fair, 2,418 exhibitors from 43 different countries presented their trends and innovations; lighting manufacturers attended the Euroluce fair as well. Altogether, 390,000 people visited the fairgrounds in Rho. The exhibition halls received them with designs that celebrate a daring combination of colours and various epochs.

Interior Design Trends from the Furniture Fair
Curry yellow and pink combined with terracotta: for the interface between living and working, the Venetian label Arper has refined its product palette with additions and innovations presented under the heading “Soft(er)”. The modular panel collection known as Paravan, designed by Lievore Altherr of Barcelona, has been extended by a set of accessories that support the organization and individual design of spaces. The patterns, materials and colours of the modular system can be combined according to personal taste.

It is not only colours, but eras as well, that mingle in Swiss manufacturer Vitra’s homey collages of combined single pieces. The various living environments presented with a blend of innovations, updates and familiar classics could hardly be more diverse: constant companions from the 1950s, such as the Eames Plastic Chair  now resurrected with fibreglass shells and 14 new colours that correspond in part to the original design stand beside Hella Jongerius’ Vlinder sofa, a new design by the Dutch designer. The sofa features covers in colourful patchwork; its bulky upholstery recalls that of the 1970s. Everything is permitted. And the postmodern as a combination of various timelines is again en vogue.

With the new Costume Sofa by Magis, Munich designer Stefan Diez has demonstrated that fashion and interiors can go hand in hand: the modular upholstered piece consists of a supporting structure, just 4 mm thick, of recycled and recyclable polypropylene decked with a fabric slipcover that can be changed as desired. It is like a garment that can be washed and changed, for clients’ wishes change with various living situations and needs.

Fuori Salone: Staging the City
The showrooms displayed in the centre of Milan throughout the Salone also featured worlds of colour that could hardly be more sophisticated. The German label Cor introduced a new furniture concept by Swiss designer Jörg Boner. The Nenou line presented itself in a radical interior done in shades of red - an apartment designed in a uniform colour scheme including everything from the radiator to the light switch. The easy chair, stool, table and bench from the new Nenou family fit into this realm of colour and can be integrated into both living and working environments. The sculptural soft furnishings are based on the basic shape of the cone with various cut-outs and free-form curves. They can be used as solitaires, but also as part of a topography.

The fact that living and working are now nearly one and the same was demonstrated by the American label Herman Miller in an idiosyncratic way. Under the motto “all together now”, the showroom in the Brera district exhibited several pieces by the Herman Miller Group. Along with office interiors from their own label, there were also furniture, fabrics, accessories and luminaires by the brands Hay, Geiger and Maharam. 450 products were brought together.

In the 1980s, the Memphis Group aimed to turn functionalism on its head. With bold designs derived from the “less is more” concept, Ettore Sottass and Alessandro Mendini, a later addition to the group, revolutionized the world of furniture. Anyone who visited the Milan Salone this year will have seen the relevance of designs such as the Carlton bookcase with new eyes: overcoming the boundaries of strict functionalism has retained its currency. The furniture industry has long recognized that these boundaries have dissolved and are now flowing towards each other.
