Extension to House in Munich

Foto: Frank Kaltenbach

Situated idyllically on a small lake, but exposed to strong winds and the noise of a nearby Autobahn, this 1950s’ house was extended with a terrace and a light but protected tract above the garage. The load-bearing structure consists of a laminated timber frame of posts and beams. Bracing is provided by the existing building and by the internal wall lining in MDF sheeting. The strip of frameless glazing at the abutment between the new and existing sections of the house continues in the form of a skylight across the roof, thus visually accentuating the junction. The outer skin is highly insulated and impermeable to air. Bookshelf units, glazing and other elements define the individual spatial zones without effecting a strict separation.
