House Extension in Glasgow, Scotland

Foto: Frank Kaltenbach

The extension of the house led to a restructuring of the layout. The most frequented rooms are now in the new section with direct access and views to the garden. A skylight marks the transition between old and new. In the corner of the new living area, sliding doors open on to the garden, dissolving the division between inside and outside. The timber framed structure is clad in cedar boarding, which lends the extension the appearance of a garden pavilion. Inset mahogany strips accentuate the horizontality of the façade, echoing the brick courses of the existing house. The effect is heightened by the different planes of the cantilevered roof, the set-back plinth and the clerestory glazing, so that the extension seems to extend out into the landscape.
