For decades, the timber industry, timber construction research, but above all climate protectionists have been beating the advertising drum for their material wood. New building materials have been developed, innovative constructions up to 80 m high-rise buildings. New technical achievements in the areas of statics, fire protection and sound insulation have been incorporated into technical regulations and legislation. More and more municipalities are making construction with wood accessible to broad sections of the population with their model housing estates. And now this: the price of construction timber has risen by 30% in just a few months. China and the USA are buying European timber and driving up prices.

However, the current boom is not the only reason for international research projects by the three universities KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen and HTW Saar School of Architecture, Saar Germany.

Now that the sustainable cultivation of wood has been certified for years, the aim is to use the valuable material more sustainably, i.e. to make it part of the circular economy. Used wood is too good to burn. The 30 speakers will use specific examples to show which strategies can be used to extend the life cycle of wood in construction, design and sophisticated architectural projects. In his key note, Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek will show that the recycling of wood also leads to exciting aesthetic solutions.
