Shop Entrance in New York

Commes des Garçons required a new artistic concept that would meet the needs of its fashion shops in various situations. The dilapidated 19th-century brick façade of the present premises, with its signboards and fire-escape ladder, was left unchanged. Beyond the existing entrance archway, an asymmetric aluminium tube was inserted that leads from the bustling life of the city into a calm interior. Neither inside nor outside, the tube forms an intermediate space that bridges the gap between the existing building and the sophisticated world within. The glass entrance door retains a sense of visual permeability. The self-supporting tube consists of five three-dimensionally curved sheet-metal elements made in a shipyard in England.
