The Emptiness of the Cabin: Muji Hut

Kenya Hara is known not only in his role as Art Director at Muji, but also for his theoretical writings on Japanese culture and aesthetics, particularly his thoughts on the concept of emptiness, which he describes as the possibility of “not-yet-being” - something that has yet to be filled with content.

If not with content, the Muji Hut will certainly be filled with life. These small, prefabricated houses by the Japanese brand are available for purchase exclusively in Japan. The interior area of the cabin covers 9 m². A sliding glass door opens onto the covered veranda, which adds a further 3 m² to the usable space.

The construction consists entirely of Japanese wood. Slight charring to the surface has made the exterior walls more durable, waterproof and germ-resistant - a traditional form of wood conservation first seen in Japanese shipbuilding. The concrete foundation protects the house from ground moisture. Muji Hut is the successor to the trio of cabins designed by Naoto Fukasawa, Konstantin Grcic and Jasper Morrison.
