Since 2018, the Collective centre for contemporary art has been sited at a literally lofty location, namely at the former City Observatory on Calton Hill, central Edinburgh. The Neoclassical building erected to plans by William Henry Playfair in 1818 had long stood empty before it underwent its makeover into an exhibition venue.

Last spring, it was next to this domed and cruciform edifice that O’Donnell Brown set a wooden pavilion with a light and airy feel: the Calton Hill Play Shelter which is intended to serve for at least three years as a corona-appropriate place for activities related to the art centre.

A similar Community Classroom in the form of a wooden pavilion had been developed by the architects a few years previously, and is now manufactured by the company Spaceoasis.

In comparison, the temporary pavilion on Calton Hill is a one-off. Its structural skeleton in white painted C24 solid structural timber painted white is infilled with panels of 18 mm boat plywood and topped by a translucent polycarbonate roof.

To conceal the steel foundations, they were dug into the ground below the courtyard paving, and can be removed without trace with the rest of the pavilion once it has reached the end of its tenure.
