Here are the answers to frequently asked questions about the DETAIL Prize 2020.

1. Is it possible to submit a project for a second time if it was entered for the DETAIL Prize 2018 but did not win?
You are welcome to submit the project again as long as it complies with the competition criteria. Projects of all building types and completed anywhere in the world after 1 January 2017 are eligible to compete for the DETAIL Prize 2018. Construction projects for new buildings, renovations, conversions and extensions may all be submitted. Architects, structural engineers, interior designers, designers and engineers are all eligible to compete, as well as lecturers at architecture schools.
2. Can just one detail or several details from a construction project be presented for the DETAIL Prize?
You are free to present several details in the project sheet, which can be drawn up at will. Please submit the main and most relevant detail separately as part of the image materials to be submitted.
3. Is inclusion of the construction costs mandatory? Will these be published?
Construction costs must be included in the competition entry. On request, however, these will not be named in the event of publication, and are also not mandatory for publication. Initially they will only be made available to the preliminary jury and main jury for information purposes.
4. What are the costs for participation?
Once the documents have been submitted in full, the processing fee becomes due, which is paid via the XING portal.
The processing fee for the DETAIL Prize is EUR 125 for one project, EUR 185 for two projects and EUR 225 for three projects. For the DETAIL Prize for Students and Architecture Schools, only one project submission is possible for a processing fee of EUR 95. Only after receipt of the processing fee registration is successfully completed.
5. Can temporary projects, such as pavilions, which have already been dismantled be submitted as entries?
As per the competition brief, temporary structures are not eligible for submission. The structure must be a statically fixed and permanent structure completed after 1 January 2017. Construction projects for new buildings, renovations, conversions and extensions may all be submitted.
6. What is meant by the following sentence in the competition brief? In the case of consortia, each member must prove that they are eligible to participate and all drafters must be named. Who exactly is eligible?
Architects, structural engineers, interior designers, designers and engineers are all eligible to compete, as well as lecturers at architecture schools.
7. The DETAIL journal is known for simple and accurate representations. Is it recommended that detail plans be updated prior to submission, or is it possible to submit revision plans?
There are no mandatory requirements as regards how plans should be drawn up. We recommend that they be presented in the way you believe best highlights the quality of your project. How you present them is your choice.
8. Can an explanatory video be submitted that illustrates the dynamic or flexible properties of the project? Can a link to a YouTube video or a link to an own website be included for explanatory purposes? Does a photograph of the space with three small details that demonstrate the specific effects of colour light-change count as an image?
In order to ensure project comparability, submitting a video is unfortunately not possible. However, you are welcome to include a link to a video in the explanatory text. A photograph of the space with three small details on colour light effects will be recognised as an image.
