The building that Deca Architecture has erected on the Cycladic island of Milos is in continuation of a long-term project. For almost ten years, the studio has been designing a parcel of land close to the coastline for residential and agricultural purposes for a private client. Since 2012 Deca has developed five projects at the almost 9 ha site, including a small residential building, an olive grove and an orchard.

Its latest project – the recently completed Hourglass Corral – has four bedrooms, making it the largest building so far. As in the case of the previous projects, its ground plan is based on a Voronoi diagram, in which, starting from central points, zones or regions are defined that contain all those points that are closer to the respective central point than all other central points.

The polygonal geometry determines both the ground plan of the building as well as its flat roof, which thanks to its lavish planting with autochthonous herbs blends in almost seamlessly with the landscape. Most of the rooms are sunken into the ground.

Three of the south-facing bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms are grouped around the central living and dining area, which opens up to an interior courtyard and to the sea. A fourth bedroom and bathroom are set slightly apart at the western end of the building complex.

Circular skylights, each installed at the highest point in the tent-like ceilings, provide the rooms additional natural light and can be opened for ventilation. Motorized shutters that work similarly to their counterparts in photographic lenses can be used to close the skylights in the bedrooms. In the evenings and at night, light is provided by circular upward-shining luminaires suspended below the roof openings.

The architects set very different priorities in their choice of materials. Ceilings and walls in smooth white plastered concrete and polished concrete floors without any further covering predominate indoors. Outside, quarry stone walls, slate paving and immense ring beams in fair-faced concrete blend the building into the coastal landscape.
