Ceramic Modules by Mattonelle Margherita

Stazione Vittoria, a stop on the Brescia underground system, has been given a new face with Mind the gap, a permanent installation by Nathalie Du Pasquier. The work was realized in cooperation with Mutina and uses tiles from the Emilian company’s Margherita collection. The linear, geometric patterns that result from combining the colourful tiles have transformed the station into a walkable, abstract work of art and become an integral component of the station.

Mind the Gap was unveiled last February and is part of the public art project Subbrixia, promoted and financed by UBI Fondazione CAB and realized in collaboration with the City of Brescia, Brescia Mobilità and Metro Brescia, and under the curatorial coordination of Nero Editions.

Subbrixia is a project promoted and supported by UBI Fondazione CAB and realized by the Municipality of Brescia, Brescia Mobilità and Metro Brescia under the curatorial direction of Nero. The project, launched in 2015 by Brescia Musei with a series of site-specific interventions for the metro stations, has now made its way to a permanent collection of public art for the city.

The installation was created in cooperation with Italian ceramics firm Mutina; the artist has worked with this company in the past. Du Pasquier is convinced that ceramics can be a fundamental element in architectural constructions. She uses the modules from Mattonelle Margherita to design with patterns and colours, thus defining a new, unexpected geometric landscape.

With Mutina, she designed the Bric and Mattonelle Margherita collections. In 1981, Du Pasquier worked with George Sowden and Ettore Sottsass to establish the Memphis Group, for which she designed textiles and furniture. Later, she turned to painting and sculpture and achieved great success, for instance with representation by the Pace Gallery, her own exhibition entitled Big Game and the display of her works in prominent institutions.  NG
