Ceramic Ornaments from the 3D Printer

Natural building materials such as clay are a novelty in 3D printing. Fired stoneware has proved itself thanks to its weatherproof qualities and fine feel. Brian Peters brings ancient materials together with innovative manufacturing processes. Before the printed, unfired pieces make their way to the kiln, he acts as a potter by smoothing the surface and applying the glaze.

Brian Peters is no newcomer on the 3D-printing scene. He studied sculpture and architecture in Chicago and Barcelona, then worked with DUS Architects in Amsterdam. In that city, he was the project director of Canal House, one of the first buildings to be realized at a scale of 1:1 using 3D printing.

In his own projects, he uses traditional stoneware as a medium. In a process of his own creation, he produces the components himself in his Pittsburgh workshop. The grid-like blocks are reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Concrete Block Houses from 1920s Los Angeles and Egon Eiermann’s aluminum tiles, which graced the façades of the Horten department stores in the 1960s. However, the geometry of Peters’ ornamental elements is considerably more complex than that of his predecessors, which is why he chose the manufacturing process of 3D printing. This method enables him to design each block individually and create continuous transitions in shape on a wall in order to express movement.

House 10X in Guilford

At the house known as 10X, which stands in Guilford, Connecticut, the screen at the entrance forms part of a renovation project. The building hails from the 1960s; the new design element is a formal reminder of that time, yet represents a new impulse as well.

Most of Peters’ works are level surfaces such as free-standing screens that act as room dividers or ornaments that can be hung on a wall. For the Prairie Cord Pavilion at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin, he came up with something rather special. Using elements measuring 30 x 20 x 10 cm (12” x 8” x 4”), he created an arc that becomes a cylinder with its reflection in the surface of the water. The diameter of the vault, which is 3 m (10’) long, is 1.82 m (6’).

The temporary art installation is impressively illuminated with LEDs, making the pond an attractive destination for visitors both day and night.
