Modular Living Complex by BIG in Aarhus

This residential building by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in Aarhus is based on a modular concept and generous outdoor areas. It fits into the master plan for its district in the northern part of the Danish city. As part of an urban development project led by the Taekker Group, the Nye district is set to become an attractive, green residential area. The second phase will bring buildings devoted to education, commerce and offices.

The design builds on another modular apartment block in Copenhagen also realized by BIG in collaboration with the Cj Group: the Dortheavej Residences. The current project, called Sneglehusene (snail houses), takes its name from the spiral-shaped arrangement of the six buildings.
Each of the curved blocks has one to four storeys and features various types of apartments. Measuring 50 to 150 m², the 93 units include not only compact studios, but larger flats and townhouses as well.

Every building in the residential complex comprises two modules: one is 2,5 m tall, and the other 3,5 m. Stacked, they create a chessboard-like pattern. Wood and glass determine the modest design of the outer shell. The differing dimensions give the facades a dynamic look. Inside, the apartments have slightly offset levels. Moreover, the interior concrete structure remains visible.

Every unit takes up the entire depth of the building, so the flats are exposed to daylight from two sides. To ensure programmatic flexibility, the design does without unnecessary partition walls and has integrated the ventilation and heating system into the floors. Floor-to-ceiling glazing and private outdoor spaces round out the bright, open designs of the apartments.

The individual blocks are arranged around a pond that catches rainwater and supplies service water to the complex. Graced with a boardwalk promenade, the pond represents the green heart of the property. The spaces between the buildings feature greenery and seating; they serve as meeting places. In fact, the little parks are inviting not only to the residents of Sneglehusene, but also to visitors from neighbouring areas.
