Our Favourites: Three roofscapes for sports and recreation

We have selected three projects that are accentuated by extraordinary roof structures: in close interaction with their surrounding area, the Swimming Pool by Enota, located in Slowenia, the Golf Clubhouse in Aqaba, and the Al Janoub Stadium by Zaha Hadid Architects, which is in Quatar.  

Self-Supporting Hip-Roof Landscape: Swimming Pool by Enota

A large thermal bath and a few houses - there isn’t much more to the Slovene spa town of Podčetrtek, which lies on the border to Croatia. This made it all the more important for the Enota architecture studio to harmoniously embed its latest addition to the Olimia spa into the landscape. The polygonal roofscape is meant to echo the hip roofs of the house architecture typical to the region.

Shotcrete Mountains: Golf Clubhouse in Aqaba

In the Jordanian coastal city of Aqaba, located on the Red Sea, a huge, 44-km² holiday resort is currently being developed around an 18-hole golf course. For the clubhouse, the Oppenheim Architecture studio decided in favour of a geomorphic design of sprayed-concrete hills which echo the appearance of the nearby mountain ranges of the Jordanian desert.

Zaha Hadid Architects' design for the Al Janoub Stadium in Al-Wakrah unites the FIFA World Cup championships 2022 with the art of Arabian shipbuilding.
