Can libraries be classified as superfluous and redundant in this digital age in which we live? Couldn’t be further from the truth! Library construction is booming: highly acclaimed architects like Wiel Arets and Dominique Perrault are directing their efforts to this sphere. While the majority of libraries remain within the classical definition with reading rooms, open access libraries and online cataloguing, many are turning to new aspects presenting themselves rather as zones of experience with shopping options, meeting venues and public living rooms, or integrated multi-media and university data processing centres. But what about the building envelopes? Purist glass façades, solid masonry or even integrated newspaper images - everything and anything is possible.

In his interview with Detail, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei declares, “I feel an obligation to stand up for the oppressed.” Weiwei’s fame in the West makes him particularly well suited to speaking out openly about the political situation in China. His commentary on political freedom and human rights is shocking. In these areas, Ai Weiwei tells us, nothing at all has improved since Beijing was chosen to host the Olympic Games. There has only been economical progress. The brutal suppression of the Tibet uprising this past March revealed once again quite plainly the dark side of Beijing’s communist regime, though the ensuing talk of a potential boycott of the Olympics did go against the grain. After all, China’s leaders want to use the mega-event to put the spotlight on themselves and their country’s best qualities – cosmopolitan, peaceable and modern – and architecture is intended to make a substantial contribution to that end. In a Herculean effort, a large number of showcase buildings were erected, some of which truly are highlights, such as the National Stadium by Herzog & de Meuron.

Concrete is a contradictory, in some properties even a paradoxical building material. Like no other material it allows us to see how it was made – the mould in which it is cast is imprinted onto the surface, yet its structural composition is concealed within. The desire for livelier forms of expression increases to those offered by perfectly smooth concrete. On the other hand, innovative developments like self-compacting concrete or insulating concrete are illustrative of the potential of this building material. What exactly is architecture? Aaron Betsky poses this profound question as curator of this year’s 11th Architecture Biennale in Venice. Under the motto “Out There: Architecture Beyond Building” he attempts to show that there is more to architecture than keeping the rain out or concocting floor plans. Betsky has his sights set on the “fabulous spaces (…) we can see in film and art”. He explained to the assembled members of the press that architecture is not so much about buildings as about the way we think and talk about them. “Architecture”, he continued, “(is about) offering critical alternatives to the human-made environment.” It embodies “the desire to make another world, a better world, and a world open to possibilities beyond the everyday”.

Flat or pitched – as recently as twenty years ago, an architect’s response to this question was virtually a profession of faith. Only those who championed a horizontal enclosure were said to be modern – which corresponded to contemporary – while those who advocated the sloped version found themselves labelled ‘stuck in the past’. For this reason, planners selected the latter when it was necessary to fulfil zoning specifications or special wishes a client might have. Recent surveys also confirm that the general public’s perception of roofs has changed very little over the years. An overwhelming majority of our contemporaries is still of the opinion that a house should have a discernible roof, whereby the desire for a ‘homey’ atmosphere clearly plays a role. But architects have put the disagreement behind them. Flat roofs and sloped roofs have coexisted – on an equal footing – since Modernism’s rigid dogmas were shed once and for all. Depending upon the circumstances and the problem to be addressed, the same architecture firm may vary the type of roof it implements from project to project. And a special role is increasingly envisioned aside for sloped roofs among avant-garde architects, for example, to generate expressive forms, or to experiment with new materials. Today, foreseeing an additional programme for the roof that goes beyond keeping the elements at bay is more crucial than the fundamental distinction between flat or pitched. This can be with respect to design or function, and may be expressed iconographically, or as ecological green roof, as programmed surface, or as the basis for solar energy systems. In this edition we present a variety of topical roofs, in different forms and materials, ranging from an extravagant, cantilevering concrete slab to the steeply sloped roof of calcareous tufa which gives the overall project a monolithic presence.

A theatre as the emblem of a city, or perhaps of an entire continent: Jørn Utzon succeeded in creating one in his expressive opera house in Sydney in 1972. In doing so, he anticipated by several decades a development that has manifested itself only recently. In contrast to museums, theatres were for a long time designed largely as functional buildings, their appearance determined by the purpose they had to fulfil. Today, they increasingly assume the form of spectacular urban elements, as Roman Hollenstein shows in his article “Space to Play”, and star architects are being commissioned to make a mark with buildings of sculptural character. Some of these schemes exhaust themselves in mere formal gesturing, like Paul Andreu’s monumental concert hall in Beijing, which resembles a gigantic object from outer space. In contrast to this, the new Norwegian State Opera house in Oslo by Snøhetta (p.198) seems less the outcome of formal considerations than a response to the local situation. It is, without doubt, one of the most splendid buildings created for the arts in recent years. Set impressively on the Oslo Fjord, its roofs, which are accessible to all citizens, make it an extension of the public realm, a new landscape within the city. It has won the hearts of operagoers and visitors alike.

There have never been so many building materials to choose from, nor were so many different ways available to process their surfaces. Back in the days of postmodernism, the prevailing aesthetics and architectural theory led to a collage of all sorts of materials. But more recently, the mix of materials was the result of the increased demands on building physics, which could no longer be met by a single building material. Multi-layer assemblies and composite materials appeared to be the only appropriate response to what are often complex requirements.

Glass is a fascinating building material with diverse, sometimes contrasting qualities: transparent, reflective or frosted, tough yet fragile. In recent decades tremendous advances have been made in glass technology. Bold architectural designs are now using glass to perform loadbearing functions and, thanks to the advent of sophisticated, largely invisible coatings, for climate control. Much innovative potential still remains to be tapped: engineers and architects, scientists at universities and in industry, and creative companies are coming up with astonishing new developments. Perhaps more so than with any other building material, advances in architectural applications for glass are emerging as a result of close cooperation between designers, experts from a range of scientific disciplines and the constructors.

Brickwork is back in trend. Even the most famous architects are starting to rediscover this method of construction. The most well-known examples include the Kolumba Museum by Peter Zumthor or the renovation of the Neues Museum (New Museum) in Berlin by David Chipperfield. But how do the architects manage to create such unmistakable buildings from standardised stone with an aura that only a massive wall can emit? With today’s standards and rules is it even possible to construct brickwork on a large scale without extra thermal insulation? On the same day as DETAIL 10 is published, on 1 October, the EnEV 2009 comes into force in Germany, which requires a 30% reduction in the primary energy demand in comparison to the EnEV 2007. The k value of an external wall must now reach a value of K=0.24 W/m2K. Can this be achieved with brickwork? Which wall thicknesses are necessary and what sort of insulating brick products are available? And what method of wall construction is better: the dual-layer, heavy brick wall with thick insulation and EIFS or a monolithic wall with new insulating brick, which can now reach a thermal conductivity of 0.06 W/mK? DETAIL 10 covers not only the artistic potential of exposed brickwork, but also the technical qualities of innovative brick, which are often hidden behind plaster or thermal insulation systems; when discussing brickwork it is hard to avoid plaster, paint and these thermal insulation systems. To display the full range of options, we filmed a school with a rear-ventilated ceramic façade for the project documentary. The green/yellow-varnished terracotta tiles are not fitted with normal vertical grooves, but rather with offset grooves like brickwork.

This attitude should, of course, be inherent in exhibition and museum concepts, trade fair stands and shops. The term exhibitions focuses on the concept of staging content in an interior space. Photovoltaics captivates with its principle, silent operation, emissions and nearly maintenance free production of power from “nothing”. Among the various tasks that architects have, the one with the most responsibility – the handling of existing structures – is taking on an ever-increasing importance. What does it mean for the architect’s image, though, if the majority of projects in the future are going to be renovations? What are the essential differences between new development and renovation according to the architectural concept? What are the basic approaches to renovation tasks? Such questions are dealt with as an introduction to the magazine topic in the discussion part of this DETAIL issue. Six architects, who have great experience in dealing with building restoration, offer their different points of view – even up to the point of “everything is modification”. The buildings that are documented in detail in this issue show the entire spectrum of possibilities that renovation offers: from the strategy of the historical staging that the architects from Atelier Kempe Thill Studio followed in the redesign of the crafts museum in the former prison colony of Veenhuizen, up to the creation of new space through the addition of elements like the roofing of the courtyard at the Technical University of Prague by Vyšehrad Atelie, or the new interpretation of space like the conversion of a building section into an open space at the Dornbusch church by Meixner Schlüter Wendt. When new elements complement existing ones as well as, for example, Nieto Sobejano’s conversion and extension of the Mortizburg in Halle, new, multi-layered room constellations are created, which respect the qualities of the building’s existing elements and enhance the experience.

Further examples are the system building constructions by Claus en Kaan Architecten, who are at the beginning of rising a new quarter in Amsterdam, and the concrete bearing structure for a administration building in London by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.

DETAIL English 3/2010 - Concept

"Small-scale housing" seems to contradict the current ambition to build sustainably, at first glance. Only after more storeys and larger communities that are closer together with the common usage of infrastructure and the realisation of an ecological concept can energy and surface usage be minimised. On the other hand, young families still dream of single family housing in the suburbs. Mixed housing developments seem to be the right kind of compromise and passive housing standards should become the rule rather than the exception.

In this issue of DETAIL, the lead article demonstrates the most important aspects of sustainable housing developments. Following this, numerous examples of family homes, from town houses, terraced housing, courtyard housing, through to city residential housing are documented by type.

In the section "Process", the Rotterdam-based architects Kempe Thill present a detailed account of their town house complex in Amsterdam. The project's low budget required a high level of standardisation and a minimisation of the facade's surface. Not only was this project produced with a high level of quality in its implementation, a high quality of living exists even though the construction possibilities were limited. Alongside this example is the Danish residential housing area from Tegnestuen Vandkunsten. Here, too, a little funding went a long way. The solution is however different: the timber buildings are grouped around shared courtyards in a rural surrounding. The buildings are modular, like building blocks in multiple variations that can be combined together, so that a complex system can be created from a small reusable element.

After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the next global event to take place in China has begun. From 1 May until 31 October the EXPO 2010 is being held in Shanghai. DETAIL was there to analyse the biggest Expo ever and take a look behind the partly innovative, partly decorative facades. Thomas Heatherwick, the artist and architect behind the much heralded British Expo pavilion, is featured in the Documentation section. Crinkled, thin stainless steel foil is long-lasting, pretty and – when you roll it thinly enough – not too expensive, he says. The two apartment towers by Diener and Diener on Antwerp’s harbour also reflect their surroundings. Just like in old office blocks, the large windows have different forms, mixing offset casement windows and fixed panes. The opaque sections of the punctuated facade are also covered with glass, behind which shimmers an aluminium coating that reflects the open sky and the water below. Tobias Wulf and Carsten Roth construct their facades with two-dimensional panels and give them a sense of depth and practical space with generous balconies. While Wulf has given a Stuttgart care home an elegant, grey stucco facade with white window frames, Roth plays with the contrast of smooth fair-faced concrete and the warm tone of wooden panels. an a tiled facade breathe? DSDHA have integrated a local ventilation system in the brick facade of their school in England. From the outside almost nothing can be seen. With many apartment buildings, a full renovation of the facade would be a good idea, but many shy away from both the effort and the inevitable complaints from residents. Artur Schankula presents his own innovative system made from insulated wooden panels. The basic version offers an efficient, sustainable and affordable new building envelope. Move up a level and the next version has an integrated ventilation system and heat recovery. He also offers a version with integrated ventilation system and solar energy collector to pre-heat the outside air. The main advantage with Schankula’s creations is that they are pre-finished in a factory and can be fitted to the exterior of a building in a short time, meaning less hassle for residents and a minimum of equipment.

With its lower C02 level the old new wooden construction material is not only the object of much research, but will also win more meaning in its usage. The current issue shows wickerwork from thin plywood panels, tiled slabs from plywood planks, grids made out of glue-laminated timber, pavilions made out of bamboo, and multi-story residential and council housing made out entirely of wood. Together with computer-supported planning and fabrication, not only efficient structures are created, but also architectural forms of expression that reinterpret the traditional material of wood. The examples vary from the innovative roof construction of the Centre Pompidou in Metz, France to the community centre in Vorarlberg, Austria made from local silver fir through to garden houses in Denmark. Finally, since the easing of fire protection laws, wood is also represents an interesting material for multi-storey buildings. Initial projects show how wood can bring us a step closer to the vision of the CO2 neutral »City of Wood«.

Small Structures

In the middle of the conflict between architecture and product design Waiting shelters, kiosks, market stalls, bus stops, call boxes, toilets, advertising columns, ticket booths, portable tents or housing units, emergency housing, tourist information – the list of small, self-contained, functional constructions has almost no end. One finds them on the nearest street corner, yet rarely awake architectural interest. The lightweight constructions featured range from small, prefabricated units to exciting civil engineering structures. They include, for example, a building system for a mobile pavilion or a residential area of steel houses, a filigree rope bridge in the Alps, or the kilometre-long roof construction of the EXPO axis in Shanghai. How lightweight constructions can also solve special challenges in everyday building work is demonstrated by the façade of an office building in Lausanne, Switzerland. Its membrane support minimises the pressure on the underground car park via a four-layer configuration as well as fulfilling its thermal demands. Further developments in lightweight construction with artificial materials are summarised in the section ‘Technik’. A look back at the work of the engineer Vladimir G. Šuchov, who devised highly innovative and aesthetically pleasing minimalist constructions during a time of material shortage, shows how his principles are still relevant today.

Glass has always been one of the most appealing construction materials available to architects. And that’s not surprising when you consider that glass elements or glazed openings dictate how daylight enters and affects a building’s interior. In addition, every decision regarding the implementation of glass on a building is relevant for the energy balance. Both the creative and the technological development of glass remain fascinating – the possibilities are far from being exhausted. This magazine includes examples of architecturally successful uses of glass alongside articles about the technology used to bend or fix it. In light of DETAIL’s 50th anniversary, Christian Schittich looks back at a milestone in the development of glass technology with a ‘second review’ of the Broadfield House Glass Museum in Kingswinford, UK, which was completed in 1994. A further contribution comes from Spanish architect Enrique Sobejano – recent recipient of the Aga Khan Award – in an interview with DETAIL about his architectural approach.

DETAIL English 3/2011 - Concept

While retail shops in the city centres are fighting for survival, the competing shopping centres are often enjoying more popularity. Tastelessly decorated and filled with the same international chains, these malls deserve a bit of criticism. The kind of psychology that is used to pull in customers and get them to spend is explained by the internationally experienced dramatic advisor Christian Mikunda in the leading article of this issue from DETAIL on the topic of »Shops and Retailing«. A selection of successful shopping centres proves that the planning does not always have to end in a gaudy spectacle rather it can also create architecture full of quality. This is exemplified by the Kaufhaus Tyrol in Innsbruck from Chipperfield Architects – elegant and smaller scale, seamlessly integrated in the city. Its actual retail space of around 33,000 sqm is impressively hidden. With the »Stücki-Einkaufzentrum« Architects Diener & Diener in Basel were confronted with a contradicting assignment. In a working class neighbourhood located on the edge of the city, a shopping centre with a hotel and office space was built on top of an old industrial area. Architects, media planners and landscape architects explain the building process of this huge project, which was difficult and challenging to integrate into the hard surroundings.

Refurbishment, reconstruction and extension of existing buildings offer architects a wide spectrum of different approaches and design possibilities: from barely noticeable changes to completely new interpretations; from energetic restoration of an existing facade to the revitalisation of the entire building complex. This DETAIL issue focuses on the contrast between conservation and renewal, between the authenticity of the building’s basic structure and its modern continuation, and shows nine exemplary projects. While the existing buildings, context and construction works are different, so too is the respective signature style of the architects, from the cautious extension of a protected villa to the restoration and upgrading of a Wilhelminian-style residential building in Munich. A hotel in Shanghai gives new life to old harbour storage halls, whilst leaving the rough character of the past untouched and enhances it with a contrasting extension. How a supermarket can be transformed into townhouses and a previous textile factory converts itself into a museum for modern art is demonstrated by projects from Winterthur and Barcelona. A hospice in St Gotthard and a holiday home in Norfolk serve as evocative interpretations of existing constructions. As the diocese architect for the town of Eichstätt, Karljosef Schattner devotes himself to the reflection on 50 years of DETAIL this issue. Insight into Toyo Itos’ thoughts and language of architecture as well as his realisations and future projects (3) are addressed in an interview that Christian Schittich conducted with the Japanese architect in Tokyo.

Net zero energy buildings

Living and working with an equalised energy balance Strategies and experiences from the perspective of planners and users Net zero energy buildings, equilibrium buildings or carbon neutral cities – depending on location and the reasons for making the calculation, the numbers are run differently. The variety of terms in use indicates that a scientific method is still lacking – which is a problem not just in regard to international communication, but also with respect to planning processes as a response to energy challenges. The clarification and meaning of the most important terms in use is extremely important for their implementation. Since October 2008, a panel of experts from an international energy agency has concerned itself with these topics as part of a project entitled “Towards Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings”. The objective is to analyse exemplary buildings that are near a zero-energy balance in order to develop methods and tools for the planning, design and operation of such buildings. The impression a building makes on its observer is very dependent on the choice of the materials used and the design of the surfaces. Light, shade, texture and patina create an influencial atmosphere for the architect. Old and proven construction methods translated into our time pave the way for new possibilities. Also, the reuse of building materials, exposing and conserving of old surfaces, and the composition of space with foreign construction material shows the enormous spectrum. Nine exciting projects have been hand picked from this field: the Synagogue in Mainz, Germany with its overhanging ceramic facade and the golden sanctuary; the facade of a youth centre in Amsterdam made out of polyurethane foam or the research centre in the Azores draped in basalt are just a few of them. Off-site manufacture of building components saves both time and costs. While this frequently led to industrialised uniformity before, it now allows development of a diversity of individual solutions. Indeed, hardly any alternatives to prefabrication exist, particularly for realisation of complex computer-generated designs. The scope of prefabrication and material processing methods available is illustrated by the project examples presented, which include a sports training centre with a sophisticated concrete folded plate structure, a hotel with fully prefabricated room modules, an exhibition pavilion composed of load-bearing plastic shells or a concert hall with a façade made of amorphous wooden elements . The project documentations are supplemented by informative contributions written by individuals involved in the construction projects, and specialised articles present the current options available for prefabrication using wood and concrete.

The term »cost-effective building« often refers only to the building costs, while a realistic evaluation requires a consideration of the entire life cycle of a building. A study by the Fraunhofer Institute presented in the Technology section, shows which savings in the building process require subsequent renovation measures and which are really sustainable. Developing strategies for creating great architecture using a low budget is something the Dutch architects & planners at Atelier Kempe Thill have been doing for years. The approach encompasses the actual layout of the apartments as well as offering standardized solutions for details using refined industrial products. In Asia and Africa, the Aga Khan Foundation supports the population by means of social support projects. Roswag Architekten were asked to develop a prototype for a school in Mozambique in this context. The result is pleasing both with regard to building physics aspects and aesthetic quality.

Modern façades make more use of multi-layered constructions to fulfil complex functional and design requirements. After dematerialised glass envelopes, the focus is more on plasticity, material character and colour concepts now. The effect created by facades is by no means limited to the building exterior. As a rule, their colours, forms, surface qualities and structures also have an impact on the appearance of the interiors. In this issue we present buildings with a range of exceptional facades, some of which frame views, while others exploit contrasts or have moving or movable components. At the Allianz Headquarters in Wallisellen, Switzerland, the supple fabric used in the curtains within the closed cavity facade is a foil to the regularity of the glazing. The curtains endow the office spaces with a “liveable” atmosphere. In another project, the finely articulated cast iron elements of a London shop facade ennoble an existing brick building. And at a residence near Munich, the coarse stucco surfaces and wood-clad cut-outs are composed in a manner that causes the inside and outside realms to become interlocked.

Toyo Ito, who is nearing seventy-five, continues to reinvent himself. Seeking resemblances in his buildings, even two of them, would likely be in vain. The common thread running through nearly all his designs, however, is poise. This he combines with an inclination to do away with the distinction between indoors and outdoors, or at least to blur it a bit. At a university library in Taipei, the irregularly placed mushroom columns stand on both sides of its pared-down glazed skin (see p. 392ff.). Filtered daylight enters the library space through glazed openings between the parasol-like supports, making the silhouettes of the roof structure become indistinct. Perhaps it is this quality of light that endows the space with a special atmosphere. Daylight plays an important role in an expressive transfer terminal at the new train station in Arnheim (see p. 398ff.), as well. Carefully positioned skylights direct it deep into the interior, but also supply views outward, helping passengers orient themselves. In contrast, a pre-school in western Austria by Bernardo Bader (see p. 388ff.) and a residence in Slovenia by Ofis arhitekti (see p. 374ff.) are characterised by thoroughly considered details and carefully selected surface materials. A shop in Kuala Lampur by Russell & George (see p. 385ff.) employs white to intimate luxury. The bright lighting and the slender cross-sections of the spatial screen obscure the contours. Toyo Ito would be pleased.

The motto of the current Venice Architecture Biennale is “Reporting from the Front”. Alejandro Aravena chose it to direct attention to architecture oriented to society’s needs. Regardless of what one thinks of the implementation of his ambitious concept, he deserves credit for addressing the profession’s real problems instead of simply letting “stars” cultivate their images. On display are, primarily, modest projects that represent the normality achieved in efforts across the globe (see p. 626ff.). Visitors also repeatedly encounter topics such as DIY, locally sourced materials, simple structures and prefabrication – the same themes we cover in this edition of DETAIL on cost-effective building. Of course, affordable housing is paramount: Heide Wessely’s article in the Discussion section looks into why it is so expensive in Germany (see p. 614ff.), while in Technology, Rainer Hofmann gives his insight into erecting it economically by describing four of his own projects (see p. 676ff.). In our Documentation section we present a shelter for the homeless made of concrete sandwich panels, a primary school in Japan employing standardised timber, and a studio in London that combines especially low-priced materials.

Clear, transparent, and democratic. These were the axioms of Germany’s postwar architecture. Transparency had a symbolic meaning for the country’s new public buildings. In 1961, for example, Baden-Württemberg’s new state parliament building was the first such institution to be completed after the war; all of its facades were completely glazed. Günter Behnisch’s lofty, daylit plenary assembly hall in the German Bundestag in Bonn also served as an example of an open society. Federal legislators convened there until 1999, when the government moved to Berlin. Transparency and democracy were synonymous. In this issue we present different contemporary manifestations of transparency. The projects are located in France, Estonia, China, and Germany and range from chapels and apartment houses to museums and departmental buildings at universities; they have transparent and translucent facades, narrow operable sashes, and carefully orchestrated views to the surroundings.

The way a building is used may very well change over the course of its life cycle. The British artist Damien Hirst, for example, is showing his art collection in listed buildings that were built some 100 years ago as theatre workshops and have been masterfully renovated and expanded by Caruso St John Architects. The Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg, in contrast, uses the Hanseatic city’s former quay warehouse as a base and stands out clearly from this existing plinth; the controversial project by Herzog & de Meuron finally opens to the public on January 11 – our contributing editor Frank Kaltenbach got a sneak preview and presents his thoughts on the building in this issue. This issue focusses on refurbishments, rehabilitations, and additions. And these need not be associated with converting the building to a new use: many interventions also improve upon existing concepts. Following the restructuring by Studio Marco Vermeulen, the museum in De Biesbosch, a nature sancturay in the Netherlands, flows seemlessly into the surrounding polder landscape. And the historic Fondaco dei Tedeschi on the Canal Grande in Venice – which OMA has renovated for use as a high-end department store – has always been a platform for commerce. An interview with Reinier de Graaf gives a glimpse of the philosophy that lies behind the Office for Metropolitan Architecture’s refurbishment projects.

A serious consideration of housing forms for the elderly is long overdue. What concepts comply with the needs and wishes of the older generation? In the current issue of Detail, we present various housing developments for senior citizens. The cultural background ranges from Japan to Switzerland, from Paris to Frankfurt and London, and a question is addressed that arises in all industrial nations. Typologies of homes for seniors are documented here that offer various levels of care in forms that range from dwelling clusters to solitary buildings integrated in the urban landscape. Health centres that provide special medical support and that contain communal zones are discussed as well as subsidized housing that offers old people – whether in wheelchairs or not – scope to find happiness within their own four walls. Our editorial team has taken a closer look at the Erika Horn care home in Graz, for example, as well as the Padre Rubinos social centre in Corunna. Beyond Bending

There is much to learn from the forgotten architectural and structural principles developed by the master builders of the past. Sun, Wind and Climate Zones When we speak of the “context” of architecture, the term usually refers to the built environment or the historical background of a building. But the climatic conditions of a building site are also contextually determined. These require specific concepts that respond to factors such as heat and cold, fluctuations in temperature, and snow loads. Not only elaborate technical solutions are needed in this regard, but also design approaches that integrate climate considerations into the planning and construction process. The issue focuses on bioclimatic construction and introduces projects that have developed strategies for dealing with climatic conditions in order to improve the quality of indoor and outdoor spaces. Instead of costly high-tech solutions, we compiled examples that approach regional conditions with carefully planned, low-tech measures to great effect – from the subtropics in Malawi to the glacier region of Norway and Mediterranean Europe. In Hanoi, a tube-style house by Vo Trong Nghia Architects filters strong sunlight through concrete slats, and allows air to circulate between the floors to ventilate its deep, narrow spaces. To protect from monsoon rains, the Dutch firm SchilderScholte developed a prototypical concept for a community center in Bangladesh, that makes use of local bamboo and drains rainwater off wide roof overhangs, which also provide shade. Our documentation and technology articles in this issue take you to a variety of climatic regions and countries, from Lebanon to the Alps, Ecuador, and the United States. They present convincing concepts for climate-responsive building, addressing an important aspect of sustainability that is often overlooked.

The Laws of the Series In the 1920s, a group of architects in Milan came together to form a movement that would later be known as Razionalismo. Architecture, they were convinced, must adhere to the rules of reason. They propagated the notion of “pure rhythm”, which was reflected in the repetition of individual elements as a fundamental design principle. Today, the relevance of serial production methods in architecture reach far beyond their significance at the time of Razionalismo. Repetitive structures can not only be found characterising the aesthetic appearance of buildings, they often play a decisive role in complex planning and construction processes, such as in the combination of individual modules or other industrially prefabricated elements. In our July/August issue, we present contemporary buildings that embrace the notion of the series in a variety of ways. For our Documentation section, Burkhard Franke explores examples in which aspects of repetition is used both as a design element and with respect to construction methodologies. A new social housing project by Florian Nagler in Munich, for instance, is a hybrid construction made with prefabricated wood elements. Meanwhile, a student housing complex in Berlin that Holzer Kobler Architekturen built using shipping containers resist any sense of monotony despite their stacked arrangement. For the exemplary French social housing buildings by Poggi & More near Bordeaux and by PPA architectures in Toulouse, modular components likewise contributed to the reduction of construction costs. Are buildings produced according to serial fabrication methods invariably cost effective? In our Technology feature, Frank Kaltenbach has compiled an overview of recent solutions in refugee housing. The majority of them needed to be built within a short time period and under high budgetary constraints. The ways in which serial production methods seem to be predestined for such demanding projects can be discovered in this issue.

Living with Nature

Robotic Building

How does the use of robots affect architecture? Schedlberg

An old farmhouse near Schedlberg in the Bavarian Forest is the latest architectural intervention of the Munich-based architect Peter Haimerl – and an attempt to save a dying building tradition. Using a daring design, the architect brought the centuries-old farmhouse back to life. Although the dilapidated structure of the wooden construction was supplemented with glass and concrete – the traces of history remain visible and can be read off the structure of the house as well as the intrusions into its substance. The house near Schedlberg is monument of building culture and its history in the Bavarian Forest. This book documents the project in a special way. Blaibach

As a result of structural changes in the Upper Palatinate, houses in Blaibach were abandoned, and schools, shops and restaurants closed. To revitalise the village centre, architect Peter Haimerl developed the design and implementation of a concert hall and civic centre with the support of baritone singer Thomas Bauer, a Blaibach native, and a group of engaged locals and sponsors and the urban development programme. While the shape of the new building suggests an ancient boulder, the excellent acoustics within has transformed the concert hall into a cultural magnet for music lovers near and far. An adjacent dilapidated building was redeveloped as a civic centre for Blaibach citizens after undergoing extensive renovations and expansion. The new centre of Blaibach is documented with photos, designs and descriptive texts. A card game to mark the occasion of the designer Otl Aicher’s 100th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972.
