On the upper floors, sections of the floor slabs are repurposed as trestles that support a tabletop made of recycled wood.
The founder of MAD Architects was born in Beijing in 1975. Ma Yansong studied there and at Yale before working with Zaha Hadid in London and founding his own studio in Beijing in 2004. In 2025, he curated the Chinese Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, was included on the TIME 100 list, and served on the jury for the Asia-Pacific region at the 2025 Holcim Foundation Awards.
The large roof comprises nearly 12 000 glass blocks. For its energy efficient renovation, Itten+Brechbühl and the glass-concrete experts of Semadeni developed a new roof structure matching current insulation standards.
Hardly visible from the exterior, the original roof thickness of 8 cm was increased by a factor of three. The modular structure of the glass block elements continues to define the visual impression.
From floor to floor, the construction and weight of the tables consisting of pretensioned ceiling slabs changes: On the ground floor, two long strips are stacked.
Facing the street, the building remained nearly unchanged. By merely cleaning the facade, the planners unveil the aesthetics of a type of architecture that is often overlooked.
Tipping the pretensioned slab sections leads to a change in the load path, wich concentrates along the lower edge.
The smokestack of the heating plant built in the 1930s rises above the densely developed site. Today, coal is no longer fired here and the power plant merely serves as a substation for the district heating system.
The planning team dissolved the horizontal organization and detached entire ceiling sections from their bearings.
The delivery area used to be situated along the southern perimeter of the hall. Later, the passageway was enclosed by a glass wall. The overhead cranes still serve their original purpose.
