An Interwoven Network in Seoul: The Weaves by MVRDV
Client: Seoul Metropolitan Government
Location: Jamsil, Seoul (KR)
After the Seoullo 7017 Skygarden, MVRDV are now planning their next project for the Korean capital. With their design for The Weaves, the Dutch studio have won the competition to redevelop the Tancheon Valley, which is located in the riparian zone between the old Seoul Olympic stadium in the Jamsil neighbourhood and the Gangnam business district.
The government’s original plans to demolish certain stretches of highway did not work out. Instead, MVRDV recognized the perfect opportunity to connect the redevelopment project to the Seoullo 7017 Skygarden. Infrastructural work on the urban surroundings will transform a kilometre-long section of the Tancheon River into an interwoven network of natural landscapes, public facilities and paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
The idea to link the natural ecosystem with a creative urban program will create a park-like arrangement that makes green social space out of obsolete infrastructure, according to Winy Maas, a Founding Partner at MVRDV. NOW Architect and Seoahn Total Landscape Architecture were also involved in conceiving the winning design. Construction is slated to begin in 2021; completion is planned for 2024.
