On the western edge of Vienna, on a 2,500 sq m northeast-facing slope of the Pötzleinsdorfer Höhe (30% gradient). The orientation of the 14 terraced houses was chosen to turn away from the street and minimize the need for sun protection on the sunny side. The housing cooperative demanded the highest possible return on investment. Furthermore, a large number of restrictive regulations from the building authority had to be observed: a rear setback from the property line equal to the front eaves height (hence the angled front edge of the soffits to reduce the setback); a 14 m spacing between buildings; only one-third of the plot area could be built upon (hence the cantilevers); and a building height of only 9 m (hence the conversion of the attic into a secondary story).
