Red like the rock pink, the new student residence in Munich's north is a striking sight. Like all the surrounding streets, the complex's access green is named after a protected plant. The rock pink blooms in shades of pink to purple and is native to meadows, growing in groups, including here in the Lüneburg Heath. It was one of the few plants used in the early Middle Ages to produce intense red pigments. The building itself is also coloured red – seven shades of red, in the form of abstract metal panels, stretch across the lower floors of the facade, acting as sunshades, creating a kind of modern ornament. The building consists of three three-storey base structures, arranged along the rock pink green, with a total length of 250 metres and a width of 18 metres, topped by five residential towers.
