Technology: Reverberation Gallery, Berlin State Opera

An impressive component of the general renovation of the inside of the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin is the 5 m high reverberation gallery. High above the heads of the audience, a practically unique, really novel visible component has been installed in the listed opera house: an architectural and engineering connection between the eventful history of the building and the present day. The opera house opened in 1742 and was conceived by Crown Prince Friedrich II and the architect Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff as part of the Forum Fridericianum. The way it looks today resulted from a combination of the ever-rising demands on the opera company, fire and war damage as well as a reconstruction to a design by architect Richard Paulik in the 1950s.
