Guiding principles such as "the renaissance of train travel" or "pedestrian zones" have played an important role in urban planning, but focussing on a single mode of transportation is no longer a viable approach to dealing with the complexities of urban agglomerations. The new catchphrase is "integrated mobility". Back in 1914, the Futurists sought to link different forms of transport at a vast scale. Currently cities are trying to create increase the density of transit networks, albeit at a smaller scale. These attempts typically involve situating the different modes on different levels. This separation has found its expression in the right-of-way regulations stipulated by traffic codes.
