Discussion: Kozolec - a Harp with Wooden Strings

From whichever direction one enters Slovenia, one soon encounters a traditional fence-like structure, popularly known as the "kozolec" or "hay harp". In its basic form, it consists of a series of vertical posts with horizontal staves fixed between them - hence the comparison with the strings of an ancient instrument. In central Slovenia, in the plains around Skofja Loka, these hay racks may be hundreds of metres in length. The kozolec exists in a variety of forms, from free-standing fences to the side walls of timber agricultural structures (ill. 1), and it can be found in most regions of the country that are not subject to strong winds. In late summer, the open filigree construction of the hay harps is suddenly transformed when sheaves of hay, and corn cobs are draped over the bars to dry.
