Publix – House for Journalism and the Public
The apartments in the hexagonal tube have a small footprint, but they gain space through the sloping sides, making the interiors feel spacious.
Ulrich Müther’s multipurpose hall in Magdeburg from 1964 has been empty since 1997. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) want to prepare the hall for new uses by reinforcing each 48 × 48 m hypar shell on both the inside and outside with a 10 mm layer of carbon reinforced concrete.
Around 2,500 precast concrete panels, each up to 4 m long, were used to form the building’s rugged facade, inspired by the cliff landscape of the Scottish east coast.
Unfinished surfaces give the residents opportunities for appropriating spaces. The door to the private room becomes the front door of a house.
