Resembling a bridge, the scaly armour of the UCCA Clay Museum spans across the passageways to the neighbouring buildings. Where this structure touches the ground, Kengo Kuma & Associates arranged shallow water basins.
YUTAKA TERASAKI studied architecture at Tokyo University of Science. In 2011 he began working for Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA). In 2020 be became partner and heads the Shanghai branch office.
Two timber contractors split the production and assembly tasks for the 286 room modules. Prefabrication in the workshop took three months. Installing the entire timber structure was completed in four months.
BAO MENGXIAN began working in the Shanghai office of KKAA in 2015 and was involved in the entire planning process for the UCCA Clay Museum.
The roof construction above the open exhibition levels consists of up to four layers of stacked and curved glued laminated timber beams.
