Brickwork has lost nothing of its fascination, standing for performance and reliability, for the human scale, for solidity and in many cases for sensuous, haptic qualities, too.
For a long time, the aim of industrialized production methods was to create bricks, that were as regular in form as possible. Today, however, it is more often the rough, uneven properties, the individuality, the imperfect, raw state - commonly achieved through traditional, craft techniques - that make leading architects turn to bricks. In this way, the material qualities are brought out to best effect; walls acquire a sense of vitality through the interplay of light and shade, and a link is forged with the earth.
Its use in a number of remarkable projects was reason enough for DETAIL to cover this topic.
既存建築を手がける上で如何にしてその責任と義務を果たしてゆくか、建築家に課せられた様々な使命の中でもその重要性は近年特に高まってきている。もし近未来において建築家が必要とされる設計／施工依頼の大部分が既存建築の再生やリフォームに特化されていった場合、建築家の常識や日常にとってその事実は何を意味するのであろうか？ 新築と既存建築の再生とでは、建築学的なコンセプトに関しても、本質的な相違点が生まれるのであろうか？建築の再生というテーマに対して根本的な設計／施工プロセスは如何にして展開してゆくのか？これらの疑問に答えるべく、DETAIL誌は今号でこの話題を大きく取り上げている。
