It is 30 years since a devastating fire ripped through the 17th century Palazzo di Vigonovo near Venice, a building known affectionately by local people as "Campiello".
From those miserable, choking ashes a new Campiello has now emerged. Totally renovated, and what little remained of its historical character restored, it has also assumed a new contemporary identity.
Sculptor Giorgio Milani and art historian Philippe Daverio worked with local architecture practice 3ndy. The sumptuousness of the old palace is beautifully captured in the spectacular new façade from lazer-cut Corten steel. Milani drew some 15,000 letters and symbols by hand which, using contemporary techniques, were transferred to the steel panels. The entire building seems to glow and shine.
Take a detour from the Biennalle to see it.
