Attic Addition in Mexico City

Hipódromo de la Condesa originated in the 1920s as a suburb of Mexico City. The long-standing building adjacent to a racetrack and park served as a bakery until the 1985 earthquake. It was later transformed into an art centre. The addition, clearly set apart from the existing structure, works its way up toward the sky, culminating in a viewing platform. All floors were executed in the black limestone ubiquitous downtown, while the flamboyant roof clad in acrylid solid surfacing material is alien. Because this material had never been used as a roof surface before, a second drainage layer was included. The 12-mm-thick sheets are affixed via silicone tape to aluminium channels within this layer.
