DETAIL Prize 2014: Festival Hall Erl

Nominated for the DETAIL Prize 2014: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, Vienna, Austria
Festival Hall Erl, Erl, Austria
The geometry of the festival theatre in Erl by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects derives from the topography of the site and establishes a relationship between it and the existing Passion playhouse. The colour scheme too emphasizes the duality between old and new. The facade of the festival theatre resembles tectonic layering. At night, cuts and folds allow views into the foyer. Inside the building, the interrelationship between the building and nature continues. The access staircase integrated into the landscape leads the visitor into the building, the foyer offers wide-ranging views of the surrounding landscape as well as of the neighbouring Passion playhouse. The building's auxiliary functions are housed in the gallery on the floor above. Wide communication zones, narrowing and widening movement areas and varying ceiling heights mean that the building's interior has a landscape-like character. Two entrances connect the respective floors of the foyer with the concert hall. Variations in the materials and surfaces illustrate the different functions of the rooms. In the foyer, bright surfaces enhance the communicative character of this meeting area. In the concert hall, wood surfaces and muted colours predominate. The configuration of the hall enables a variety of uses.
