ECOWEEK proposals for Thessaloniki

Bridge between Greece and the Middle East
ECOWEEK founder and Chairman architect Elias Messinas pointed out at the press conference that "ECOWEEK is a Greek initiative. It is an NGO that was created on the island of Aegina in 2005 and since 2008 is active in several countries in Europe and the Middle East. Its mission is to raise environmental awareness, especially among young professionals, and to promote sustainability, innovation and the principles of integrated development. ECOWEEK promotes environmentally-friendly solutions for every-day practices with regard to energy conservation, use of renewable energy sources, waste recycling and organic waste composting, and ecological building. ECOWEEK is developing into a platform of dialogue and cooperation for young voices for the exchange of ideas in 'green' design, entrepreneurship and sustainable communities and urban development." Organized by Greek international NGO ECOWEEK, the conference took place in Thessaloniki, Greece from 28 March to 3 April with architects, designers, landscape architects and engineers from 16 countries. Following the equally successful ECOWEEK conferences in Athens, Cyprus and the Middle East, ECOWEEK is becoming the cultural and ecological happening for 'green' design and the platform where young professionals create and design new ideas for ecological buildings and sustainable cities. Upcoming events
ECOWEEK 2011 in Thessaloniki was the first of a series of events scheduled to take place in 2011:
  • Milano, 12-18 September 2011: The first conference and design workshops of ECOWEEK in Italy will take place in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano.

  • Athens, in December 2011 in collaboration with Greek architecture magazine KTIRIO.

More events are planned for 2012: in the Middle East on February 2012, Italy, Romania and Germany.
More than 300 young participants developed ideas at the 6th ECOWEEK “Urban Communities and Green Architecture”. The ECOWEEK 2011 workshops were hosted by 37 professional groups in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, among them firms of architects, landscape architects, and designers, the AKTO design school, Villa Kapanji (Educational Institution of the National Bank) and the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In the workshops young professionals, guided by expert professionals, developed new ideas for ecological and landscape urban interventions in the city centre in collaboration with the City of Thessaloniki. The workshop themes were the following:
  • Design a passive solar house of zero emissions.
  • Design the sustainable renovation of an existing building.
  • Design a sustainable urban intervention and/or landscape design project,
  • Design a project that will benefit a local community or NGO in the city.
