Chapel in Palmela

In converting a transformer station near Lisbon into a prayer chapel, the outer form was largely retained. The sole external addition is a scaffold-like trellis laid out to a U-shaped plan around the existing cubic structure. A small gravel forecourt affords access to the interior, which is shielded from direct light and prying eyes by a fabric screen. The altar space is daylighted via a newly inserted roof light and a low existing opening next to the entrance. The spare internal fittings include the altar itself and a peripheral bench, both in larch. The white plasterboard finishings are contrasted with the dark rendered exterior. In the course of time, the trellis will be overgrown, and the chapel will merge with the surrounding park.
