Architecture acquires its expression and feel from the materials used and their surface quality. The examples in the next issue of DETAIL range from a courtyard in classical brickwork to a sensuous, raw exposed-concrete wall and a building skin in expanded metal. Also featured are current innovative structures like the MuCEM in Marseilles by Rudy Ricciotti, which uses a network of high-strength concrete to create a fascinating interplay of light and shade, and an industrial hall in Weil am Rhein by SANAA with a white, corrugated plexiglas skin that explores the effect of dematerialization.
