Roofs

Only seldom is the roof an essential component of a building’s design. This edition of DETAIL presents buildings in which the roof defines both the building’s overall image and the space below it. Examples include: the load-bearing wood structure covering a swimming pool in southern England, whose folds create a complex space; a series of pitched concrete roofs as playful culmination of a vacation home near Stockholm; and the shimmering-gold hip roofs that crown a museum in Ahrenshoop and make subtle reference to the region’s reed roofs. The polygonal green roof atop an education centre in Vrchlabí in the Czech Republic absorbs the contours of the surrounding landscape, while an apartment complex on a sloping site in Brugg reinterprets the terraced building typology.
