Grimshaw to design new terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport

A mere century ago, railway stations were still a symbol of the pace of modern life in newly-emerging conurbations. Now, in today's globalised world, air travel has taken on the indispensable role that railroads once had. The importance of airports – particularly multinational transport hubs – is growing from year to year, and respective technical standards and security requirements are constantly changing.

Passenger figures at Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal A will probably soar 23 percent over the next five years and is expected to grow a third altogether by 2032, thus necessitating a new terminal in replacement of the existing one.

The architecture firm Grimshaw working in partnership with STV has been selected for the design of the new airport terminal. For the client, greatest-possible flexibility of the overall concept is of the highest priority in order to enable future modification and expansion measures. The first renderings for the US$1.41 billion project reveal a stronger focus on the smooth organisation of boarding processes rather than on pioneering design.

The new terminal is scheduled for completion in 2022.
