Shade seeker

The new Italian headquarters of the 3M company in Pioltello near Milan is the first part of a new master plan drawn up by Mario Cucinella as long ago as 2005. The 10,300 m² new building accommodates offices, conference rooms and a canteen.
The architects placed special value on the provision of shade during summer: the 105-metre-long and 21-metre-wide building block has five floors in the north and is stepped back successively towards the south. On the resulting roof terraces, extensively projecting steel pergolas were erected and partly fitted with photovoltaic modules. In turn, several atriums, reaching down to the ground floor, supply the interior office spaces with daylight.
