In 1964, when Queen Elizabeth II opened the Forth Road Bridge right next to the historic Forth Bridge in Scotland, she would hardly have anticipated opening another adjacent bridge over the Forth more than 50 years later, as she did with the new inclined cable-stayed Queensferry Crossing last autumn. Now three impressive engineering structures from three centuries cross the Forth and form a unique ensemble of major bridges.
In addition to this outstanding work of engineering, this issue of structure presents further exciting structural engineering solutions, such as the exposed roof trusses of a delicatessen market in Stuttgart, where timber and steel enhance each other, or the expressive steel structure of a footbridge in Be’er Sheba, Israel.
