Kontemplatives Baumaterial: Wrightwood 659 von Tadao Ando Architect & Associates

Chicago Brick aus den 1920er Jahren vermischt sich mit der unverkennbaren Handschrift des Pritzker Preisträgers Tadao Ando. Der japanische Architekt hat in Chicago mit »Wrightwood 659« aus einem vierstöckigen Etagenhaus in Lincoln Park eine neue Ausstellungsfläche entworfen.  Das für Andos Architektur charakteristische Zusammenspiel von Beton und Licht wird durch das dritte Material im Mauerwerk ergänzt – eine Abfolge von rechteckigen Fenstern unterschiedlicher Größen in der Ziegelwand durchflutet das gebäudehohe Atrium mit natürlichem Licht. Der im Raum schräg angeordnete Aufgang aus Beton führt die Besucher entlang eines Glasgeländers in die oberen Stockwerke. Eine verglaste Terrasse mit Schrägdach komplettiert die architektonische Intervention in »Wrightwood 659«. Die Ausstellung »Ando and Le Corbusier: Masters of Architecture«, die mit über 100 Zeichnungen, Fotografien und Modellen den Einfluss Le Corbusiers auf Ando aufzeigt, begleitet die Eröffnung des Gebäudes. »Wrightwood 659« ist eine private und gemeinnützige Initiative, die sich in zukünftigen Ausstellungen mit gesellschaftlich relevanten Fragestellungen in Architektur und Kunst beschäftigt.

Weitere Informationen:  Wrightwood 659 was founded by Fred Eychaner and Dan Whittaker. Eychaner is a longtime LGBTQ activist, philanthropist, and president of Alphawood Foundation Chicago. Whittaker, who is co-curator of the inaugural exhibition, served as owner’s representative for construction of Wrightwood 659, and as liaison with Tadao Ando Architects. Alphawood is a grant-making foundation committed primarily to advocacy, architecture and preservation, arts and arts education, promotion and protection of the rights of LGBT citizens and people living with HIV/AIDS, and other human and civil rights. James D. McDonough is executive director and general counsel of Alphawood.
