Railway Station in Assen

A 3,000-m2 triangular roof protrudes in a grand gesture marking the new entrance to the city of Assen in the northern Netherlands. The open structure of wooden trusses, which is open to all sides, creates an inviting station that serves buses, cars, bikes and pedestrians as well as rail traffic. The supporting structure consists of 324 triangles that join to make hexagonal areas and transfer their loads over 12 round columns of white-coloured steel. Altogether, 620 m3 of wood were used in this construction. The service buildings, which are of brick, have been set beneath the roof as free-standing pavilions. In the video, Stefan Prins of the Powerhouse Company and Jeroen de Willigen of De Zwarte Hond speak of gestures large and small, urban quality of sojourn and climatic aspects of green planning.
