Our Readers’ Favourites in February

In February, our readers were particularly enthusiastic about the following three contributions: a residence on a lot by Potsdam’s Jungfernsee, a new school of architecture in the Danish city of Aarhus and a house near Osaka in Japan.

A House on Stilts by the Lake: Family Home by Carlos Zwick Architekten

Ten separate foundations and 40 diagonal stilts: this was the recipe for success devised by Carlos Zwick Architekten for creating a residence on a lot by Potsdam’s Jungfernsee. After rejecting four applications, the building authorities were finally convinced by a design that lifts the low lakeside house by 3 metres, sets it harmoniously among the historical trees and preserves two existing half-timbered structures.

Anything but an Ivory Tower: Aarhus School of Architecture by Adept

The atmosphere of an industrial hall permeates this new building erected by the Adept architecture studio for the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Aarhus. With its central location and radical openness, it will create more points of contact between teaching activities and the urban public sphere.

An Inexpensive Classic: Home Near Osaka by Yasuyuki Kitamura

For a client couple with a limited budget, Yasuyuki Kitamura has created a house that includes many elements of traditional Japanese residential architecture. One exception is the roof panelling of fibreglass-reinforced plastic that lets daylight pour into the structure.​​​​​​​
