Wood on the Advance in the City

At the end of 2020, the shell of Buggi, Germany’s first FSC-certified wooden building, was erected in Freiburg. With a total height of 25 m, the building on Bugginger Strasse is just below the high-rise limit. Even the elevator shaft, staircase and exterior facades are made of wood. For the storey ceilings of the eight-storey building, timber construction company Bruno Kaiser from Bernau used Lignotrend products. The Ligno ribbed ceiling elements provide fire protection in the 30 residential units and ensure the 90-minute fire resistance required in Building Class 5 without the need to clad the wood surface. Due to the ribbed timber frame construction of the ceilings and the exterior walls, far less wood is used in the new building planned by Weissenrieder Architekten than would be the case with a solid wood building. With their layered structure, Ligno ceiling elements can respond flexibly to all fire protection requirements: Additional wooden layers provide the necessary fire resistance of REI 90, and due to the complete filling of the chambers with gravel, no open cavities remain.
