Wooden Windows and Insulation

In the course of its renovation, the listed building of the former university hospital on the Safranberg in Ulm, built in the Art Nouveau style, was converted into living space. As part of a newly planned inner-city quarter, the historical building together with two modern extensions now forms an ensemble of new apartments. The successful combination of old and new, including the outdoor areas, is the work of Neu-Ulm-based architects Nething.

The apartments in the former hospital building feature varying floor plans and high ceilings. Their character is also underlined by historical wooden windows with sash bars from Kneer Südfenster. These meet contemporary requirements for thermal insulation and have a Uw-value of 1.3 W/m2K. At the same time, the historical windows with their slender profiles and arrangement come very close to their original appearance. The manufacturer was able to create varied window geometries with often different connection details, for example by combining arched windows and shutters. It also realised large-format window designs for the new duplex apartments in the formerly unused top floor.
