Zyklorama im Dschungel: Hórama Rama im MoMA PS1 von Pedro & Juana

Zusammen mit dem Museum of Modern Art in New York organisiert MoMA PS1, eine der ältesten Institutionen für zeitgenössische Kunst in den USA, das »Young Architecture Program«. Für die 20. Auflage konnte sich die immersive Dschungellandschaft »Hórama Rama« von Pedro & Juana (Ana Paula Ruiz Galindo & Mecky Reuss) als Gewinnerentwurf durchsetzen.

Die 40 Fuß hohe und 90 Fuß breite Zyklorama-Installation verwandelt den Innenhof des MoMA PS1 mit einem Rundgemälde, Wasserfall und Hängematten in einen urbanen Dschungel, der unmittelbar mit dem Stadtbild von Queens kontrastiert. Durch die Gegenüberstellung zweier Landschaften im Übergang artikulieren Pedro & Juana ihre Vorstellung eines kulturellen Austausches, der sich aus einem kollektiven Bewusstsein für die akute Lage menschengemachter Umweltprobleme ergibt.

Obwohl alle fünf Finalisten offene als auch geschlossene Narrative im Hinblick auf Oberflächen, Bewegung, Raum und Struktur eingereicht haben, steche der kreisförmige Baukörper »Hórama Rama« mit seinen hervorstehenden Holzborsten und Inszenierung heraus, so Sean Anderson, Associate Curator in MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design.

HISTORY

This year marks the 22nd summer that MoMA PS1 has hosted an architectural installation and music series in its outdoor space, and the 20th anniversary of the Young Architects Program, which began in 2000. The inaugural project was an architecturally based 1998 installation by the Austrian artist collective Gelatin. In 1999, Philip Johnson’s DJ Pavilion celebrated the historic affiliation of MoMA PS1 and MoMA. The previous winners of the Young Architects Program are SHoP/Sharples Holden Pasquarelli (2000), ROY (2001), William E.
