13/13 Stone building in the village centre of Scaiano, Switzerland – Wespi de Meuron Romeo Architekten, Caviano

Wespi de Meuron Romeo Architekten write about their project:
The original substance of the historic stone building consists of the main structure with a vaulted cellar and two stories above. An annex was later erected, likewise completely of solid ashlar masonry. An outdoor stone stairway in front of the main building’s façade and separating walls on both sides were probably built at the same time as the annex. Prior to the annex there was a small open square in front of the main building, the only such square in the village. Despite the necessity of complete renovation the ashlar construction was retained to a large extent. All wood beam floors were replaced by concrete surfacing, to provide additional support for the old masonry.
A new timber construction pitched roof, which is not visible from the village street, was integrated in the ashlar construction of the main building. A central goal of the construction was to emphasise the force of the solid stone walls and the archaic simplicity of the volume of the historic building and to give it a new radiance. The outdoor stone stairway was removed, which restored the small village square in front of the building. The materials of the interior are adapted to the archaic building: natural, impregnated cement floors, stone-grey plaster for the walls and ceilings, oiled larch wood for the woodwork and kitchen furnishings. The new modifications have blended with the existing building, so to speak, to create a new whole consisting of old and new.
