3D mastered: Grand masters by Platige. Image.

The Battle of Grunwald by Jan Matejko has been digitally modelled in 3D.

The study of art, particularly the grand master paintings, is often the study of the artist, his life and times, his influences, his contemporaries and his other works as well as the techniques he used and even the type and ingredients of the paint. Modern studies might also look at the physical qualities of the painting itself using X-rays, ultraviolet and other imaging technologies. But creating a 3D reconstruction of the painting brings new possibilities as this work by Platige Image of Jan Matejko's The Battle of Grunwald demonstrates. Platige Image are an imaging and animation company who have demonstrated their virtuosity by taking a complex painting and building a 3D model of each of the characters. It involved modelling 67 unique characters each rendered as 3D models and put together to form a composition resembling the original painting as closely as possible. The Battle of Grunwald is a painting by Jan Matejko depicting the victory of the allied Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania over the Teutonic Order in 1410. The painting was created in 1878 and is displayed in the National Museum in Warsaw.
