3D-printed wheelchair developed by Benjamin Hubert


The GO, as the means of getting around is named, is a development by Benjamin Hubert working in the newly-established LayerLab research division in collaboration with the 3D print specialists from Materialise. The goal was to remove the stigma generally associated with wheelchairs as medical devices and to create a more human-centred vehicle that improves everyday life for its users. The designer developed the lightweight, highly functional and customisable GO after conducting numerous interviews with wheelchair users and medical practitioners. The seat and foot bay are produced according to the height and proportions of the future owner and then joined with the other 3D-printed components. This process involves conversion of the respective user's biometric information into 3D digital data for production of the wheelchair in perfect alignment with the disability concerned and the user's weight and body type.  Orders are placed via an app that also enables future users to follow production of their bespoke wheelchair from the very start and to specify individual wishes regarding optional elements and colour choices.The finished product is delivered six to eight weeks later.
