A Box of Delights Exhibition of Will Alsop's Work at The Public
Will Alsop rejoins the discourse on architecture with an exhibition at The Public, a cultural centre he designed and which he once described as his best yet! A Box of Delights is part of the Art of Architecture programme which has seen Alsop collaborate with students from Birmingham City University Architecture Department, Walsall College Interior Design Department and Sheffield Hallam Architecture Department.
The Public has attracted controversy. For one thing it cost rather a lot to build, but then it has attracted 350,000 visitors since opening. That at least proves that the appetite for culture, art and architecture is as strong in the 'Black Country', an industrial part of England, as it is anywhere else.
A Box of Delights is designed to make us think about architecture and how it makes us feel. For a region of England that has recently been pushing the envelope of contemporary architecture with buildings such as: The New Art Gallery Walsal, and Selfridges, Birmingham, The Public's architectural initiative appears to be sowing its seeds on fertile and promising ground.
