A Foldboat for the City

The Foldboat is a minimalist, plastic boat that allows urban dwellers to experience their city anew.
The Foldboat, a collaborative project by the London-based designers Max Frommed and Arno Mathies, was introduced at the London Design Festival in September: A seamless folding boat made of one single sheet of plastic. The objective of the designers was to create an accessible flat-pack leisure boat designed for the use on shallow canals and lakes.
As a stout paper-folding evolution of an essential origami, the small boat was born out of a workshop on design and paper that focused on generating 3D forms out of 2D drawing and conceived especially for the urban use.
The two designers intend to create next an even smaller version of the Foldboat that every urban resident could keep, for instance, under his/her bed and then fold in the boat shape whenever he/she feels like a boat trip on the canal.
If Max Frommed and Arno Mathies can keep the cost for the Foldboat down, it would be a great design for the many urban dwellers who would like to escape the city’s density and to experience their city out of a different perspective by making use of its public waterways.
