Added Value from Subtraction: A Single-Family Dwelling in Germany

Uniform building structures from the 1960s have created the context for a single-family dwelling in Krailling. This new construction, designed by Unterlandstättner Architekten, distinguishes itself from the rest as a sculptural creation.

Influenced by its urban-planning context, this house, created for a family of five, corresponds with the other houses in the neighbourhood in terms of its cubature and roof shape. However, openings and cutaways of various sizes give the house four different, delicately shaped faces and an individual character. The recesses, plastered in white, and the oak-clad window embrasures in the façade stand out against the roughly plastered, anthracite-coloured shell.
The volumes subtracted from the compact body of the house provide both shape and structure to both the exterior and interior living spaces. Roofed-in areas have been created in the entryway and garden: these help delimit the open areas and provide shelter from sun and rain.
The interior space is particularly characterized by the possibilities created by the lighting exposure and the various lines of sight. On the upper storey, a recessed loggia allows natural light to fall on the interior staircase; large glazed surfaces between two of the children's rooms overlook a wide vista. The interplay of materials and surfaces taken up on the exterior façade is continued throughout the interior as well.
