And the earth moves - again: Norwegian Tourist route projects by Reiulf Ramstad Architects.
This the second part of the mini series exploring the Norwegian Tourist route projects by Reiulf Ramstad Architects. This post features the hair raising Gaularfjell platform, the Rørvikfjell platform and the Tourist route Rv 889 Havoysund.
Taking the Gaularfjell platform, which I think typifies the approach of the practice, it is all about context. The spot chosen for the intervention gives as near perfect view of the scenery as it is possible to imagine. The architects speak of the platform being like a pulpit, and being at one with the sky and scenery.
At a technical level the platform displays a structural virtuosity. An egg-crate construction of steel plate gives the deck sufficient stiffness to cantilever out into nothingness. But from the images one could hardly tell how this is achieved. After all, it is the scenery that is the important subject... for most people at least.
