Art using pencils: Sculpture by Jennifer Maestre.
Working from Massachusetts, the sculpture Jennifer Maestre, uses coloured pencils to create her art, but not to draw pictures as one might expect.
Her technique relies on the pencil as objects that become something like three dimensional pixels when repeated sufficiently often.
By cutting pencils in their multitude to precise lengths, and sharpening them at one end, she is able to create three dimensional forms that resemble flowers, seeds and sea creatures. The pieces are quite remarkable.
By subverting the way a pencil is used to create art, her work raises questions about what the drawn image actually is. When we see a pencil drawing, is it just the pencil form that is redefined in the drawing, in the same way that the form of a tree is redefined to make a house of timber?
